A couple of weeks ago I promised never to post my music on this blog again.
So I lied. I composed a new tune today, and once again I’m using it as an excuse for a blog post. I guess it’s the exhibitionist hidden somewhere deep inside of me that craves attention.
It’s another self-penned lyric - as I mentioned in my previous mp3 post, I had never written lyrics before - but it seems I’m on a roll here. I’m really not too happy with these lyrics either - it’s just a tool to create a “pop pastiche” - or whatever this is.
At the center of this track is a compressed piano sound - surrounded by assorted guitar sounds. My wife says it reminded her a little bit of Pet Shop Boys’ sound on “Release” (2002) - I didn’t think about that when I recorded it, but PSB is one of my favorite bands - and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that influence shines through in my music. I’d be happy if it did.
Dude.
This is really fucking good!
Oh wait. I just saw that four out of five words are contained in parentheses. You don’t need ‘em!
Thanks Dude! :)))
I intended to put the whole title in parentheses - I discussed that with Robert here in an earlier entry - but it made infinitely more sense to me to leave “Again” standing alone - there’s an almost poetic quality to it, I think - don’t you see?? I’m really pleased with the title, I should probably use parentheses much more in my lyrics. Maybe I should retitle my other song to “Tell (Me)”
You realised, I’m sure, that those parentheses were aimed at you, Jason? I forgot to mention the title in the post, though… I can assure you that the real title is without any parentheses at all.
No, I totally didn’t, but as I walked home last night listening to your song, I kept thinking, “how can I talk him out of using those parentheses?” You got me good on this one.
The more I listen, the more I like. The instrumentation and production is really great. I’m a total sucker for that lead guitar line in the chorus as well as the backing vocal singing “over.”
That’s really cool. Thanks!
I downloaded the song last night, and once I saw the title in iTunes I thought, Jason’s going to love the parentheses. Well done on all counts! It’s a good song! I wish I had more musician friends who wanted me to listen to pop songs like this one. (Sorry, other friends, but you’ll never see this comment, so who cares?) Put together an album soon, Terje, or at least an EP.
Thanks Robert! I actually miss some musicians and music geek friends, too, in my all too conventional and “grown-up” life. I have wonderful friends, but none of them share my more or less complete obsession with music - not even remotely so… and that’s a bore.
I like how the two songs you’ve presented so far have a full sound. I have friends who record in semi-professional studios, but their songs still end up sounding kinda … small.
Thanks. I usually pay a lot of attention to the arrangements - I’m not a great player, but I think my arranging skills are pretty decent. I do tend to over-produce my stuff, though.
I think a lot of bands don’t really have a clear idea about the arrangement when they walk into the studio - they just play out their parts as if it was a live concert or a rehearsal.
