Paul Newman Dies

So, it’s time to revisit some of my old Newman movies. I sort of realized he was near to the end judging by various news stories in the last couple of months - I even came across an obituary draft somewhere on the web a few weeks ago. But it’s sad nonetheless. I enjoyed a lot of his movies growing up - The Color of Money, Absence of Malice, The Sting, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Exodus are some of my favorites among his performances… oh, and I really enjoyed him in The Verdict. I even have quite fond memories of him in The Towering Inferno.

I had forgotten until I reread part of William Goldman’s “Which Lie Did I Tell?” this summer (or maybe it was “Adventures in the Screen Trade”) that Redford was originally supposed to be the star of “The Verdict,” but he kept sending the script back for rewrites, which frustrated Richard Zanuck and David Brown, the producers. When they learned he was working on the script with Sydney Pollack and trying to get him interested in directing the movie behind their backs, they fired him and got Newman.

It was sad to read that Redford and Newman were planning to collaborate one last time with “A Walk in the Woods.” I wonder if Pollack would’ve been interested in directing it if it had been made before 2007, when he got sick, since he’d directed both of them before. George Roy Hill, the director of “Butch” and “The Sting,” died in … 2002, I think? And he hadn’t made any movies since “Funny Farm” in ‘88.

I think “Nobody’s Fool” is Jeff Giles’s favorite movie. I’d like to see it again.

it’s hard not to admire Paul Newman for putting his money to work in such productive ways, such as his Newman’s Own line–high quality stuff and the proceeds go to good causes… very smart.
